V10 - COATING FOR STAMPING AND METAL FORMING APPLICATIONS
The new nano-structured hard coating is produced by proprietary low temperature process and thus the dimensional accuracy of the tools is preserved. Due to the lower deposition temperature (<5000C) there is no need for post-coating heat treatment and is also eliminated the risk of thermal malformations. Another result is the decreased turnaround time.
The surface layer of the coated tool consists from metalo-ceramics with high hardness, increased ductility and low friction coefficient. This provides excellent wear resistance to the tools subject to high normal loads while the shear stress capacity is also increased. Moreover the dense and thick structure decreases the plastic deformation of the tool under concentrated load. Therefore no fatigue cracks will be developed in the base metal.
Having a low coefficient of friction the flow of the blank material is eased during forming and the abrasion wear of the tool as well as galling (pick-up) are delayed.
Recommended applications:
- Forming, Extrusion, Deep drawing, Punching and Riveting
Advantages of the V-10 coating:
- Forming Dual phase, HSLA and stainless steels
- Tight tolerances maintained
- No distortions
- Improved flow of the working material
- Unlimited number of re-coatings
- Can be stripped without damaging the steel substrate
- Quick turnaround time
Technical data:
- Deposition temperature : 300 - 400 °C (570 – 750 °F)
- Thickness of the coating : up to 15 microns (0.0006")
- Hardness: typical 2500 HV20 (up to 3500 HV20)
- Coefficient of friction: less then 0.1
Friction coefficient test data:
Test conditions (modified pin-on-disk)
The coating was deposited on a pin rotating between two polished specimens made from 4140 equivalent steel. The specimens were heated through 20 to 500 0C. A standard force was applied to provide plastic deformation in the contact zone.
The value of the coefficient of friction was determined as the ratio of the shear strength and the normal contact stress developed on the contact surface under the test temperatures. The threshold value is 0.35-0.38 and the tribo-couples with lower measured coeficient provide a better flow of the materials, a lower possibility of seizure and galling.
The test results are presented below.
